Liz McGrath, volunteer coordinator of the PICA Friday night Meal Site for nearly 30 years, was honored with the Sr. Judy Soares/John Coen Award at the Annual Luncheon of the RI Coalition for the Homeless, held on March 30, 2009. This award is given to a non-profit staff member who exemplies extraordinary service to the homeless. Liz, an Intensive Care nurse at RI Hospital, and Nurse Practitioner in private practce, has always arranged her work schedule to be available on Fridays. In addition to the Meal, she checks in our clients, arranges for doctor's visits, and and delivers food to the homebound. It is an amazing honor for an amazing person!

PICA is involved in a wonderful downtown partnership with the Aspire Restaurant at the Hotel Providence. When the stove at the Mathewson St.

United Methodist Church, host site of the PICA Friday night Community Meal, was shut down by the Fire Department, Pastor Aida approached Aspire. Instead of just allowing the use of their ovens, Denise Olean and Chef Jason Dragonetti volunteered to prepare a dinner for 250-300 people once a month!

The first meal was tossed salad, lasagna, fresh rolls and homemade strawberry shortcake! A great big thank you goes out to the staff of Aspire and to Pastor Aida for making the connection.

PROJECTS

Organize a fundraiser!

Joe Pankowicz
, Michael Force and Harry Pendleton, all employees of Rhode Island Hospital, raised $503 dollars by running the Blessing of the Fleet Road Race in Narragansett!

Or Do A Project !
Chris Capuano
of Boy scout troop 2 in east greenwich transformed the meal Sites storage pantry as his Eagle Scout project. He organized a team that built shelves, cleaned and organized the storage area. This generous gift of his time and talent created a more efficient work space for our volunteers.

Or Designate a Gift !
Jane Houle raised $300 by asking friends to donate to PICA instead of giving her birthday presents !!
